Zaf’s Cannons made it 2 from 2 with a solid 4-0 win against fellow U11s Oakleigh Cannons (Costa) at Jack Edwards Reserve in beautiful sunny conditions today.
Playing in the white away strip, Zaf’s Cannons started the match on fire with a couple of shots at goal from both Ethan & Mikey that struck the post before Ethan put away his 2nd chance to give his side an early 1-0 lead.
Charlie then made it 2-0 shortly after with a beautiful header off a corner cross from Mikey.
Costa’s boys had an opportunity to pull it back a goal after a nice counter attack but their shot went just wide and at Oranges & Snakes the score remained 2-0 to the “visitors”.
In the 2nd half, Costa’s side came out playing attacking football which had Zaf’s Cannons camped at their end in the opening ten minutes of the half but a couple of good saves and last ditch defending from both Alex & Luke kept the “home side” at bay.
Zaf’s Cannons then made it 3-0 when they broke up the right hand side of the field and found winger Georgia who dribbled back inside & slammed the ball into the back of the net for her first proper season goal of 2019.
Moments later goalkeeper Athan pulled off a beautiful one handed save to keep his clean sheet in tact and then Zaf’s Cannons made it 4-0 five minutes later when captain Marcus put away a poor clearance with a nicely struck goal in the top right corner.
After the match coach Zaf said “I always believed in this group, but today they exceeded all our expectations. Every game they’re going up a level but there’s still a long road ahead, and heaps of work to do but today I was proud of everyone. Everyone was a man of the match today. And that’s very rare in soccer.”
Zaf’s Cannons next match is in two weeks time as Easter Weekend approaches.
