Cannons Go Down in South Melbourne Rematch

Zaf’s U11s Oakleigh Cannons ended the 2019 season with a disappointing 5-1 home loss to South Melbourne at Jack Edwards Reserve last Sunday.

In what was billed as an Oakleigh v South Melbourne rematch, after the teams drew 1-all in Caulfield the previous Sunday, the Cannons simply couldn’t put away their opportunities in what was an exciting end to end battle.

After the Away Side jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first half, the Cannons pulled one back when captain Marcus nailed home a long range free kick to make it 2-1. The home side came close to equalizing before the break but Marcus’ long range shot went wide of the mark and South Melbourne went into the Oranges & Snakes break a goal ahead.

Early in the 2nd half South Melbourne caught the Cannons pressing high on the counter attack and took their opportunity to jump out to a 3-1 lead and with it, the wind out of the sails of the home side.

South Melbourne added two more goals to their tally and the match ended at 5-1 handing Zaf’s Cannons their 5th loss of the 2019 season.

Overall it was a very good season for this group of kids who came together at Oakleigh for the first time playing under Coach Zaf.

After a very successful start of the season going undefeated in their first 10 matches, the side finished with a Won 9 Drew 3 Lost 5 (GD +15) record in their Sunday East 11 Kangaroos Green League games.

Thanks to Zaf and his assistant coaches for an enjoyable 2019 season!
