Zaf's Cannons put Five Past Eastern Lions To Claim 5th Win

Updated: May 27, 2019

Zaf's U11s Oakleigh Cannons put on a fine attacking display of football against a strong Eastern Lions U11s side to win 5-3 in front of their home faithful at Jack Edwards Reserve in Oakleigh today.

The away side started the stronger and came close to taking an early lead 4 minutes into the first half but their shot sailed just over the crossbar.

Minutes later it took a moment of brilliance from Winger Lucas to put the Cannons ahead 1-0 when he danced through five Eastern Lions defenders to smash the ball into the back of the net.

The Cannons doubled their lead about 13 minutes later when Defender Jimmy scored a freakish goal off a corner delivery, much to the delight of his Oakleigh team mates and the home side went into the half-time break with a 2-0 buffer.

After the break, the Eastern Lions had another shot on goal saved by goalkeeper Athan to keep the visitors scoreless.

Shortly after, Striker Theodore applied pressure on am Eastern Lions left defender as they attempted to play the ball out from a goal kick and his deflected block found midfielder Georgia who fired home Oakleigh‘s 3rd goal.

The visitors responded moments later with a nicely taken goal after a counter attacking move and the score read 3-1 with still close to 20 mins left to play.

3 minutes later Zaf’s Cannons kept pressing and were rewarded with a corner kick. The home side executed a beautiful set piece in which Charlie passed out to Central Defender Luke, who evaded a Lions defender and put back a lovely pass to Charlie, who then powered a shot past the Lions goalkeeper to take the home side out to a 4-1 lead.

Winger Mikey made it 5-1 just 6 minutes later with a nicely placed shot in the right corner and by that stage, with approximately 10 minutes the go, Oakleigh were looking very comfortable.

However the Eastern Lions suddenly moved it up a gear applying constant pressure in defence and the away side landed their 2nd goal to make it 5-2 with about 4 minutes left to go. The visitors then made it 5-3 right on the stroke of full-time as Zaf’s Cannons walked away with an impressive and hard fought 5th win of the season.

Next Sunday Zaf’s U11s Cannons are on the road to Ashburton Utd at Warner Reserve.
