Zaf's Cannon's kept their unbeaten League record intact with a resounding 10-2 home win against the Monbulk Rangers SC at Jack Edwards Reserve on Sunday.
The home side immediately sprung into action from the opening whistle with Striker Ethan scoring a brace in quick succession to give Zaf’s Cannons a 2-0 lead after only 3 mins of play. Monbulk Rangers were stunned but slowly grew into the match with some nice passing of their own however crucial passes in the final third weren’t finding their attackers and the Cannons solid defense of Alex, Luke & Charlie held strong.
Jimmy subbed on for Ethan and was rewarded with a goal almost immediately after a superb pass by midfielder Nicholas allowed Jimmy to slot home his team’s third goal.
Then shortly before the break, Monbulk Rangers finally found a way past the Cannon’s defence but their shot just sailed over the bar and Zaf’s Cannons held a 3-0 half-time lead.
Shortly after the break, Monbulk came out firing and goalkeeper Athan had to pull off a big save, low to his right, to keep the away side scoreless. The Cannons then began to pick up the pace in attack which forced Monbulk immediately on to the back foot and only 2 minutes later, Winger Georgia nailed a loose ball in the box into the back of the net to take their lead out to 4-0.
From there the flood gates had opened. Jimmy bagged another further 3 goals while midfielders Nicholas and Marcus also added their names to the scoresheet and Zaf’s Cannons were up 9-0 with 10 minutes still left to play.
Cheered on by a loud group of away supporters, Monbulk Rangers were finally rewarded their first goal of the match when their striker tapped in a deflected save to make it 9-1.
Striker Ethan completed his hat trick shortly after to send the home side into double figures and then with minutes left to play, Monbulk Rangers found a second goal after the Cannon’s defence failed to clear a lovely cross into their box and at full-time the final scoreline read 10-2 to the Oakleigh Cannons.
Monbulk Rangers‘ Wolverines U11s side had just entered the Kangaroos league after last week‘s FFV’s Competition restructuring bye weekend and despite being on the wrong end of a very heavy scoreline, the team must be congratulated for fighting on till the very final whistle.
Next weekend, Zaf’s Cannons will head to Bulleen to face the Bulleen Lions Red U11s in what should be a very entertaining match.
