Zaf's U11s Oakleigh Cannons had to dig deep in very cold wintry conditions to come from 2 goals down to draw their 2nd League Match of the 2019 season at Jack Edwards Reserve yesterday. Despite all the attacking chances, the home side found themselves down 0-1 eight minutes into the game after a miscued pass from the back was pounced on by the South Melbourne attackers who nailed the ball into the back of the net. South Melbourne's lead doubled approximately six minutes later after a nice counter attacking move caught out the Oakleigh Cannons defence.
Zaf's Cannons were finally rewarded for their up tempo attacking play for most of the first half when they clawed back a goal almost immediately after with Defender Alex pouncing on a South Melbourne clearance from an Oakleigh corner and firing it into the left hand side of the goal.
Like the last time these two teams met, South Melbourne found themselves leading by a goal into the half time break.
In the 2nd half, Zaf's Cannons continued with some fine attacking football and after a misfired shots off target, midfielder Nicholas found a bit of space in front of him and slammed home his 3rd League Goal of the season to make it 2-2 with still over twenty two minutes left to play.
The Home Team went up another gear and the searched for a 3rd goal to take them into the lead but some last ditch defending from South Melbourne denied them time after time.
At the very the end of the match, South Melbourne were awarded two late corners but some urgent defending at the back from the Cannons prevented the away side from snatching it at the death and at full time both teams had to settle for a hard fought 2-2 draw.
Next weekend, Zaf's Cannons will be travelling out to Monbulk to play the Monbulk Rangers Wolverines for the 2nd time this season.
