Cannons battle hard to Sixth League Win of Season

Coach Zaf gives his pre-match instructions

Zaf’s Cannons had to work hard for a 3-0 away win against a very good Ashburton Utd SC U11s at Warner Reserve in Ashburton this morning. Both teams had plenty of opportunities in the first half to get a first goal but were denied by either very good goal keeping or last ditch defensive pressure that forced some hurried shots. The scoreline read 0-all at half time which was a fair reflection of a very hard fought first half. However after the break, Oakleigh came out with far more urgency on both attack and off the ball but a few shots towards goal went just wide of the mark. Ashburton Utd had a golden opportunity to take the lead 5 minutes into the second half when Goalkeeper Athan was forced out of his goal after a lovely counter attacking move, but the home side's final shot went just wide of the post. Oakleigh responded with a brilliant attacking move of their own only 3 minutes later. Defender Luke pounced on the ball, took it up through the midfield, passed it wide to Nico who then found his midfield partner in Marcus. Marcus passed the ball beautifully through to winger Diego who took the shot on first time to loop it over the Ashburton keeper into the top right hand corner and give his side a 1-0 lead. The Cannons missed a couple more opportunities before the win was sealed by Winger Mikey who knocked in his side's 2nd goal of a lovely corner delivery by Winger Georgia. Oakleigh then capped off a remarkable 2nd half performance when, just before full time, Theodore placed the ball perfectly past the Ashburton keeper into the bottom left hand corner of the goal to make the final score 3-0 to the visitors.

The teams shake hands at the end of a hard fought match

Next weekend, Zaf's Cannons will face East Kew for the 2nd time this season when they play the Panthers away at Hislop Reserve.
